Kaalba

Superb self-contained accommodation at Maleny

Quiet, private, beautiful

Kaalba ('bright place' in the local Gubbi Gubbi language) presents beautiful self-contained accommodation for up to two people in a private and natural setting

Perched on the hillside only a hundred metres from the Obi Obi Creek, Kaalba is a delightful self-contained studio with views out over the rainforested valley. It is in a quiet and protected location. There is no road noise. Throughout the year more than ninety species of bird can be seen (and heard) from the veranda.  When it's raining the sound of the river fills the valley.

Situated on the east side of Maleny it is seven minutes from the town centre and ten minutes from Montville – only thirty-five minutes to the coast – close to several of the most popular wedding venues on the Range.

This is a special place: a short walk leads to a deep fifty metre long swimming hole with basalt rock steps. A little further and you'll discover the waterfall and rapids. Platypus live in the creek, if you're an early riser you might be lucky to see them.

A brief selection of comments from guests:

As a water baby and a lover of rivers, the swimming hole here was the thing that drew me for my last few days in the area before flying home. It did not disappoint. Steven's place is a quiet and private getaway close to the lovely towns of Maleny and Montville. It is set off the road in a small community of private dwellings, with an abundance of wildlife and birds. The swimming hole was divine and despite being too cold for the locals at this time of year, it was perfect for me! It is a stunning spot with a very safe and private swimming hole - which is hard to come by as the loca swimming spots in this area are quite crowded. I spotted many birds, water dragons, fish and a goanna on my short walk down to the Obi Obi. What a special place, thank you for hosting me and if I'm ever back in this area I will definitely be back for a longer swim in the warmer weather.

We travel a lot and have stayed in many, many places around Australia and the world. This quite possibly could be the best place we’ve ever stayed. We’ve given a lot of 5 star reviews, but now we have a new understanding of 5 stars! We have no choice but to go up to 6 stars out of 5! Why it’s 6 stars: -friendly and welcoming - helpful recommendations about the local area and property - Steven’s desire to make sure we had all that we needed and more -generous gifts - waking up to that view and the sound of the birds - the river and all the animals right there on the property - the passion for sustainability - the consideration for hygiene and cleanliness - it was like we were the first to ever stay there! Cannot recommend staying here enough! Thank you so much Steven and Tyyni for sharing your place with us. PS You need to know, in case it’s not clear, that you can actually see the rainforest from the bed - incredible to wake up to the view and the bird calls!!

Kaalba has been created with sensitivity to its exquisite environment, and you can't help but feel the beauty of nature all around you. We felt immediately at home and loved the care that has been taken in the design, quality and upkeep of this lovely space. Everything was fabulous, and Steven and his dogs were the best hosts.

Joanna, August 2023

Kaalba really is a very special place to stay. The little house is equipped with everything you could need, with quality appliances and furnishings. Steven gave us a wonderful, warm welcome and we got the impression that nothing would be too much trouble. The location is superb, very quiet other than the sounds of nature, a perfect place for just sitting and being in the moment. We were privileged to see the platypus whilst enjoying a sunset drink, that really made our stay absolutely perfect.

Sue and Jim, March 2023

The view from the back and side deck is spectacular. The cabin is very well built and facilities are all quality high standard. It was the perfect getaway, including the effort our host went to provide us with a welcoming atmosphere, bottle of wine and local knowledge of the area.

Kim, March 2023

Paradise Found! The surroundings and the view from the balcony were sublime. The short stroll down to the creek and waterhole to watch for the ever elusive platypus was well worth the scenery regardless of the outcome, you could just sit for hours listening to nothing much but nature. Steven, Tyyni and the beautiful, friendly and oh so loveable dogs were just as good as the accommodation. We would 100% recommend to everyone who would listen and even those that don't want to.

Book this place. You won't regret it.

Rosemary, September 2022

Our expectations were far exceeded. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The little house was incredibly cozy and very thoughtfully decorated to actually make you enjoy spending time inside. It was equipped with everything you could possibly need as well as many other thoughtful extras. The location was excellent and the view was lovely. Would recommend in a heartbeat.

Ron, May 2022

Steven is a great host! The cabin is very clean and extremely comfortable. It has all the necessary amenities. It is a beautiful spot with some lovely scenery within walking distance.

Hannah, May 2022

Kaalba is an absolute delight. We didn’t realise the property had a stunning water hole which is a short stroll from he cabin. We had lovely weather and took advantage of sitting in the sun on the deck looking out to the gorgeous rainforest. Steven was a fantastic and very friendly host and our weekend getaway was just delightful. We hope to be back one day and can highly recommend it to those who want to spend time in nature.

Kristy, May 2022

Loved staying at this beautiful place in Maleny. Was beautifully decorated, clean and located on a gorgeous property with swimming holes, fruit trees and nature all around. Steven was a great host and gave great recommendations. His dogs are lovely too!

Rachael, March 2022

The location and tranquility are exceptional. Our host Steven made sure we were introduced to the property, facilities and local walks and attractions. A truly beautiful part of the world for a self contained stay! Wouldn’t change anything. Even though the weather was not perfect, the surroundings more than made up for it.

David, Feb 2022

Steven is lovely, the cottage is set amongst the trees, where you can sit out on the deck and listen to nature around you. A wonderful place to unwind, read, swim, walk and enjoy. I would whole heartedly recommend this place.

Sally-May, Feb 2022

The studio was clean and comfortable, filled with beautiful art, books, homeware and eco-products. We loved waking every morning surrounded by trees and birdlife. The highlight of our stay was watching a platypus swim across the waterhole and scramble into its burrow. Thank you Steven and Tynni for your hospitality and a priceless experience.

Randelle, September 2021

This place was amazing, I will definitely be coming back again and again. It was such a beautiful, magical and peaceful place. We ended up cancelling plans for the day and just hung out on the property instead. Steven was a great host who brought us some freshly picked bananas for breakfast and he had the sweetest dogs in the world. They had fruit trees around the whole property which made a great breakfast juice. I would 1000% recommended this place. There’s so many treasures to discover on this property that will take your breath away.

Lillian, September 2021

We loved our stay. The surroundings were very calming, with magnificent trees and green space all around. The creek and waterhole a lovely stroll away. The home was very comfortable, with everything we needed for a few days away. It had a very cosy, liveable, warm and welcoming vibe. The bed was very comfy. Steven was very welcoming and a great host. We'd highly recommend a stay in this beautiful corner of the world.

Megan, September 2021

What a great restful place to stay. Most comfortable bed we have ever had at accommodation. Thoughtful touches of ground coffee, DVD, and more. Great bed lights (often a bug bear). Loved sitting on the deck and listening to the creek & birds. Experienced host, prompt response and good information. Clean and smart setup.

Kristina, June 2021

Steven is a great host. He was able to recommend places to eat, visit and explore in Maleny. The place was extremely clean with nice personal touches (like access to both Stan and Netflix!!). We feel truly refreshed after this quick getaway to Maleny. Would definitely recommend.

Dana, April 2021

What a wonderful little getaway! After our long planned interstate holiday got cancelled last minute, we booked Bright Place on the day and it was just what we needed! Perfect for disconnecting from the world, nestled above the trees. We fell asleep to the sounds of the creek below and woke up with the birds. We explored the gorgeous nearby Maleny and Montville, sampling all the tasty treats of the area. Steven was such a delight to deal with, giving us tips and tricks on what to do in the area. We’ll definitely be back :)

Suzie, April 2021

Kaalba was a wonderful little cabin on a scenic hinterland property. The cabin was in an ideal location and had a backyard that included a creek with a large swimming hole and lovely waterfall. The host, Steven, was very hospitable and more than happy to help out with a range of different things. I couldn’t recommend this property more!

Rhys, February 2021

Very relaxing bush setting, close to Maleny and Montville. We appreciated Steven's local tips, and the well appointed accommodation. The waterhole was a special treat!

Kiri, February 2021

Kaalba is one of the most beautiful places I have been. It is surrounded by beautiful nature and you can hear the creek running from where you are. It was a very comfortable stay as well with great amenities. They have a handy book full of info about places to dine and things to do and we had a great time as a result. The waterhole is simply breathtaking and is a must see for anyone who loves the tranquillity and quiet of nature.

Sarah, January 2021

One of the best stays we’ve had. Location could not get any better, nestled in dense rainforest between the peaceful towns of Maleny and Montville. From platypus spotting to swimming in the surrounding waterfalls … Kaalba truly has it all.

Luke January 2021

What a wonderful studio situated amongst nature! A well appointed cabin in a peaceful corner of Maleny. Everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Loved everything from the DVD collection to the Mukti products, to the games and books. Was only a short stay but wish we had stayed for longer.

October 2019

The scenery was incredible. Having the creek a short walk from our room was amazing. The bed was very comfortable and the owners and dogs were very friendly

September 2019
Un endroit calme, cosy et propre, tenu par des hôtes charmants et attentionnés. Un super séjour, dans la naturel. Merci

September 2019

Beautiful surroundings - it was wonderful to wake up in the treed landscape. Our host was very generous e.g. said we could have fruit which was in plentiful supply (grapefruit mandarins etc) and was also very helpful with respect to local knowledge. The cabin was beautifully appointed.

John, July 2019

A very special outlook into nature, situated on a property offering a walk along Obi Obi Creek, this cabin is a cosy location for a few days getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The cabin itself was very clean and very well appointed, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Steven is a friendly host who offers a warm welcome and a few helpful suggestions about places to visit and where to eat. We really enjoyed the fresh citrus fruits growing on the trees just outside the cabin door. Would definitely recommend this place to friends.

July 2019

Excellent quiet location in a beautiful spot. The owners couldn't be more helpful with everything during the stay. Well appointed simple accommodation with a beautiful outlook. Perfect for a quiet weekend away, but still close enough to access all the main areas/ attractions. Excellent directions and information provided by the owners. Highly recommend, we will be back

Kelly, June 2019

Kaalba is a magnificent place, situated in the most stunning natural surrounds. I felt very lucky to spend time on this special piece of Earth. Extremely private & peaceful, yet only a short car trip into town. The accommodation itself is just beautiful, entirely faultless & with many thoughtful touches that were most appreciated - like the freshly ground coffee, local organic toiletries & the fantastic range of books!! Steven was an exceptional host & a truly lovely person. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here & will definitely return again!

Jenna

Great quiet private accomodation with everything you could possibly need. Especially loved the creek and private swimming hole.

Wendy

I have stayed in many airbnbs across the world and Steven’s is without a doubt one of the most beautiful, tranquil and best value for money places I've stayed! Steven is also a great and thoughtful host who will stop at nothing to provide you with a pleasant stay!

Tom

Absolutely beautiful accommodation, with a very gracious host. It was relaxing beyond measure and we would definitely recommend to all we meet. We intend to stay again in the future!

Will Presig

The place boasts a perfect balance of modernity and an organic feel. The abundance of trees surrounding the studio create a feeling of being amongst the tree tops, and the large windows give the bedroom a flush of sunlight. The place was well-equipped with everything you need for a short stay. Steven was perfectly hospitable in showing us local activities and inviting us to pick fruit from the trees on the property.

Alex, July 2018

Fabulous location in lovely quiet spot but close to town. Very well appointed accommodation and spotlessly clean. Our hosts were delightful and made sure we had everything we wanted.

Lesley May 2018

Words cannot describe the tranquility of this place. I went there to find myself, and find myself I did. Lovely hosts, incredible serenity and a quick drive to wonderful shopping and food. 10/10... will forever go back.

Lisa September 2017

It was so relaxing, private & the walks down to the creek & lake amazing. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Looking around Maleny was beautiful - very quaint. We'll be going back again real soon. You came home so relaxed & revitalized. Thanks Kaalba for such a beautiful location. Everything you needed was there.

Lesleigh September 2017

Super quiet and beautiful rainforest, great for a back to nature visit, loved lying in bed and hearing nothing but the birds and nature, we loved having no free-to-air tv, we had free wifi which ran very smoothly, Steven our host was fantastic and a wealth of knowledge.

Tracey August 2017

Absolutely beautiful, peaceful retreat! Only minutes from town and Steven is fantastic, very quick with communication and wonderful welcome and lots of help! 100% recommend!

Natalie July 2017

What a stunning place, and well beyond our expectation. We were made immediately welcome by Steven upon our arrival at Kaalba - even prior actually with maps and handy hints about the area and accommodation. The cabin itself was perfection - stunningly decorated with beautiful linen, kitchenware and organic local products. The view caused immediate relaxation...We had the most beautiful stay and can't wait to get back! Thank you Steven!

Dimity June 2016

This was an amazing place in a magical location. Steven was there to greet us and made us feel very welcome. He offered some great suggestions for walks, wildlife and places to eat. The place was clean, modern and had everything we could have needed. It was lovely to wake up to the sound of the birds and treetop views.

Anna, January 2016

Absolutely amazing!

We arrived at the property after a whole day of driving and was greeted by the owner who showed us around the property and gave us a book that he had written, fresh milk, oranges and apples from his garden, a bottle of champagne and offered to deliver freshly ground coffee if we wanted it. He offered advice on where to eat while we were there for different meals and things to do if we wanted them. The property is very tastefully decorated and is private, nestled amoungst the rainforest. The property has such a great feeling to it, we really wish we could have stayed longer. The products used for soap and hair care are all luxury locally made items that made the stay even more enjoyable. We honestly kept repeating how lucky we felt to have stumbled across this property and booked it. The hosts were just amazing in every way. They gave us enough information to be informed but left us alone to enjoy our time together. We enjoyed a small rainforest walk the next morning in the grounds. It was just magical. I would highy recommend this property for singles or couples wanting a romantic and relaxing getaway, we have been recommending the place to anyone that will listen.

Susan, October 15

We really enjoyed our stay, very relaxing and we felt our stress just melt away. We felt like we were living in a tree house. We would certainly recommend to our friends. Steven was friendly and willing to help in any way.

Michael and Ruth, October 15

Kaalba is a tranquil retreat with birds, sunlight and the sound of water trickling over the stones in the waterhole and in the stream behind the cabin. My husband and I stayed two nights and were welcomed with a genuine warmth and kindness. Steven is close enough if we needed anything, but far enough that we felt private and alone. The cabin had everything you need...and some. Beautiful and clean, modern decor with a comfy bed and lovely linen. We had a complimentary bottle of champagne which we enjoyed on the back deck after a great day in nearby Maleny. We will definitely be back again, a perfect spot.

Liz, September 2015

This was a great experience. We were greeted by Steven and welcomed into the self-contained cottage. Steven made us feel very comfortable, he had fresh local milk, freshly ground coffee and beautiful citrus fruits picked that morning from his yard. The cottage has everything you need including heating, a fridge, lovely linen, cutlery and wifi. The cottage is very spacious, clean and comfortable with a great deck overlooking lots of greenery. The cottage backs onto the Obi Obi creek, which you can access and walk along. The natural sounds of the creek and the sounds of the birds whistling first thing in the morning was a superb way to wake up. Steven and Chris were available if we had any questions and are very knowledgeable about their town. Maleny and its surrounds are just beautiful and Kaalba was the perfect place to stay to experience it. We went home after 2 days feeling so relaxed. We will definitely be back, thank you Steven and Chris.

Renee M., June 2015

We loved our stay at Kaalba this June. The apartment is bright, cozy and very comfortable. We loved waking up to birds singing while gazing at the view and the sun shining across the deck every morning with a nice cup of coffee and fresh oranges from the yard. Very peaceful and relaxing... As far as practicalities go, the apartment was clean and cozy, but with plenty of space to spread out. A small fridge and cooking space were quite handy, as were the table and sofa, plus the deck with another table and two chairs. We didn't get to use the grill but would have liked to. The heat worked great, bathroom a good size, good shower (absolutely loved the Mukti shower gel and shampoo), bed and pillows very comfy, everything clean and in excellent shape. It's in a lovely, peaceful setting but only a short drive into Maleny. And last, but definitely not least, Steven and Chris were excellent hosts and made us feel very welcome, going out of their way to make our stay easy and enjoyable. I highly recommend staying at Kaalba!

Michelle and Richard, June 2015

'Fantastic stay, apartment was clean and well equipped. We felt so lucky and relaxed, with the amazing view and creek just a few metres down the back yard. Can't wait to come back. Chris made us feel so welcome, and left a bottle of complimentary champagne for our honeymoon!'

Renee, April 2015

'Staying at Kaalba was a delight. It is a modern and stylish studio in an exquisite Hinterland setting. Kaalba provides a perfect opportunity for rest and relaxation.'

Great work! Your last 12 ratings were each 5 stars. On average, hosts near you get 5 stars only 74% of the time. You’re what we call a superhost.”

'Steven's studio in Maleny was incredible. Spotlessly clean, and beautifully put together. We had everything we needed and more. Steven went over and above to make sure our stay was enjoyable. I've stayed in quite a few places in Maleny, but this has quickly moved to the top of my list. Highly recommend and I would love to stay again.'

Jake, November 2014

'My wife and I were lucky enough to have recently stayed at Kaalba. We found the studio beautifully appointed with wonderful private views out over the remnant rainforest. Our hosts, Steven and Chris, were very welcoming, unobtrusive and friendly which added a good feeling to our weekend... We have stayed in several places in the Maleny area and can highly recommend Kaalba if you are looking for a great place to relax in a quiet and natural environment.'

Bill Jollie and Trudi Chester-Freeman, November '14

'Steven and Chris are warm and welcoming hosts and have created a beautiful retreat in this very tranquil setting. Kaalba was a delight - a perfect little place to escape to for a few nights. Everything was as described and there were even some unexpected extras e.g. home grown bananas, freshly ground coffee and Chris's Anzac biscuits. I look forward to returning in the near future.'

Eimear, February 2015

'Steven's place is fantastic! The cabin has a great modern aesthetic and was in beautiful forest surrounds. We loved the small touches like the freshly ground coffee and lovely locally produced soaps. Steven was a great host and had some great suggestions (the Thai nearby is fantastic!) We'll definitely be back!'
